Redeemer of Israel

“And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.” (Deuteronomy 28:68 KJV)

“As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 47:4 KJV).

The Hebrew name of Jesus is Yeshua (ישוע), (pronounced yeh-SHOO-ah), which is a shortened form of Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ), (pronounced Ye-HO-shu-A). Yeshua means “to save” or “salvation.”

Redeemer

“For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.” (Pro 23:11 KJV).

“Redeemer” translates a Hebrew word that is used in three ways. It is a word that is also translated “kinsman” (a near relative). A kinsman was responsible to “redeem” family property or a kin from slavery. ((Lev. 25, 27 and the book of Ruth.)) It was also the kinsman’s duty to be the “avenger of blood” when a kin was murdered. ((Num. 35:1-34; Deut. 19:6, 12; Josh. 20:3-9.)) The Greek word lytroō was used to translate the verb “to redeem.” Lytroō is a term rooted in slavery. It was the price required to buy freedom for a slave. ((It is used in Mark 10:45; 1 Pet. 1:18-19 where Jesus is our ransom.))
